What Does It Mean When My Water Heater is Making Weird Noises

All of us need a working water heater in our daily lives. We need it to do laundry and the dishes and to shower. We usually have a good idea when it is not working properly with inconsistent temperatures or no hot water at all. But what does it mean when your water heater is making noises?

Bubbling

A water heater tank with sediment and mineral deposits can cause a bubbling noise. This is from the sediment that builds up from debris in the tank. The noise is similar to that of a coffee maker since it holds the water near the burner, so the water bubbles passing through the sediment layer. This can cause your water heater to overheat and make your tank weaker or burst over time. To avoid this, call the plumbers in Scottsdale, AZ to flush out the water heater to get rid of the sediment.

Popping

When your tank is full of residue, it will make a popping noise. Residue like limescale, sand, and other minerals will buildup in the tank over time. To avoid this, get in the habit of cleaning the tank annually to remove this buildup from the interior walls.

Rumbling

A water heater makes hot water, so as the liquid expands and passes through any debris in the tank when it heats up, it could make a rumbling noise. This is caused by the water moving through the dirt, which can lead to insufficient use. Another reason to clean out your tank from time to time.

Sizzling

Poor water flow in your water heater will cause a sizzling noise. Look at the temperature and pressure relief valve first. Is the noise coming from here? Make sure all valves are off, switch off the power and water supply, then call your plumber. This is a sign there could be a leak and the sizzling noise is coming from condensation droplets landing on the burner.

Humming

A humming noise from your water heater could be caused by a faulty heating element or another part due to old water that enters and moves around the unit. This will also cause the top of the tank to shake. This issue needs to be fixed as soon as possible.
