Spring cleaning doesn’t have to be done only during spring, it can of course be done at any time of the year, but when you do it, it’s important to try and be as conscious of your health and the environment. Here are some tips for spring cleaning your home with natural, non-toxic cleaners:
The Power of Steam
Chemicals are not necessary for getting your home hygienically clean, despite what the commercials may tell us, and steam cleaning is a fantastic way of getting many surfaces sparkling clean and not smelling toxic. This method of house cleaning removes up to 99.9% of all germs and uses only water.
Portable steam cleaners are fantastic, but if you don’t have one, you could always hire one. Use the steam cleaner on your microwave, sinks, bathrooms and many more areas of your home, but be sure to check the manufacturer’s instructions before you use it as not all surfaces are suitable for use with a steam cleaner.
Make your own Natural all-purpose cleaner
Choose your favourite essential oil – tea tree is a great one for its pleasing aroma and anti-bacterial properties – and combine it with water to make your own, natural and great smelling all-purpose cleaner. Alternatively, you can combine vinegar, water and an essential oil to make a cleaning solution that will clean hygienically and not cause harm to you or the environment. For tougher stains and harder to remove dirt, you can make a cleaning clay to use in conjunction with your natural all-purpose cleaner, and when used, it works like a soft scrub cleanser that can safely be used on stove tops, tile floors and even glass.
Good old Lemons, Vinegar, and Baking soda
These 3 store cupboard essentials when combined, are fantastic at removing tough stains while leaving your surfaces smelling fresh and clean. The baking soda fizzes and removes a whole host of grime, while the lemons and vinegar leave surfaces quite literally gleaming. Cheap, easy to find and entirely safe for the environment and your own health, these 3 items can help you to keep your home clean, the natural way.
As with most cleaning tasks, they become easier the more often you do them, so if you want your home to be naturally clean, try to have a cleaning schedule that enables you to carry out a few tasks at a time, on a rotational basis. Alternatively, hire a maid service to come in at regular intervals and keep it looking just like a show home!
