Moving in the Summer? Beat the Heat with These 5 Tips

The kiddos are out of school and that vacation time has arrived, so what better time to move than in summer? Honestly, just about anytime besides the dead of winter is better than hauling loads in scorching heat. But, reality prevails. With that in mind, we offer these five tips to beat the summertime moving heat.

1. Book Your Business Early

The busiest season for moving is summer, so trucking companies and movers are busy and can charge a premium for late bookers. Call early, save some cash, be flexible on dates, and don’t eliminate self storage as a temporary option.

2. Use Cooler Hours to Your Advantage

Peak hours of heat are the worst time to start loading and unloading items on the truck. Hit up early mornings and just before dusk to keep things cooler.

3. Dress Right for the Job

If you’re participating in the move, wear the right clothing that keeps you comfortable while shielding your skin from the sun. Wear a hat, breathable fabrics and sunscreen is a must—even if the sun isn’t shining.

4. Stay Hydrated

The human body is almost 80% water, and you will want to give yourself a good bit of extra hydration when moving in the summer. Stick with water and revitalizing beverages while avoiding alcoholic beverages.

5. Keep Heat Sensitive Goods Protected

Pets, photographs, CDs, paintings, candles and electronics don’t do well in the heat long term, so be sure to keep these items in an air-conditioned cabin during travel. If you are planning to put such items in a self storage facility, be sure to secure a unit that offers climate controlled spaces that keep such goods at ideal temps.
