The prefab homes are usually constructed in a factory setting and then shipped to the actual building site in several pieces. Then they are assembled at the actual building site within a few days.
Vision Development has come out with their prefab homes for the UK market. They are also providing different levels of service right from flat-pack homes to modular construction with all internal and external finishes and also all that is in-between.
Types of prefab homes
You can now find many different types of prefab houses that also meet the standards of the local building codes of the UK.
-
Modular homes
Most of the modular homes will consist of one or a few more modules that will be built in a certain factory as per the local building codes in the country where the home is going to be built.
Then it will be transported to the actual building site, on the location where construction will be done. Usually, each module comes fully fitted with all interior fittings like electrical, plumbing, closet, doors, and stairs. Hence, hardly any finishing work will be needed when the home will be assembled.
The whole thing may complete within a time frame of 3 to 4 months only.
-
Panelised homes
Typically, such panelised homes need more finishing than modular homes because the following activities are done at the site:
- Interior finishing work
- Painting
- Cabinet installing
- Stairs
- Flooring.
However, factory build-time will be the same as modular homes but on-site building time is longer. Often it may take a few weeks to a month to complete these works. You can take the total building time of anything between 3 to 5 months, which will depend upon the efficiency of the contractor that you have chosen.
-
Pre-cut homes
These are kit forms of home and are cut to as per the design specs decided in-factory, and then are shipped to the actual building site. Some pre-cut homes can also be panelised homes, but all panelised homes may not be pre-cut homes.
These homes are specially meant for those people who want to build their house in a DIY way. All the instructions are also supplied so that anyone can assemble them by following the instructions.
These homes basically differ from panelised homes, as panel homes are assembled by the company however the pre-cut home can be assembled by anyone familiar with such jobs.
-
Shipping container homes
These homes are built from shipping containers and similar to modular homes, they can also be stacked.
However, before you decide for shipping container building, you must understand that it is not like building a prefab home. Usually, shipping containers are quite sturdy and strong, and not designed for residential use.
If you like the appearance and prefer shipping container homes, then you can find a few manufacturers who can redesign the shipping container particularly for residential and commercial purpose.
All such types of homes can certainly offer cost and time advantages however, one needs to do a good amount of research before choosing one.
